My son can’t wait for the summer workshop

Learning to play the drums is so much fun, but what makes it even better is meeting and playing together with other musicians. The unique workshops run by the amazing teachers at In The Pocket Music School have been fun, relaxed and a great collaborative experience.
The teachers were adaptable during the pandemic lockdowns and quickly provided a variety of Zoom musical activities from ‘Cooking….’ sessions, Bandlab (music technology) sessions, group Ukulele lessons, Drummers pad practice sessions and more. My son can’t wait until the summer ‘in person’ workshop

I wish there were many more Rodrigos and Joes

My daughter, who is a keen musician, has been under Rodrigo’s and Joe’s wings for a good few years and I can’t thank them enough! They have helped her with her confidence, widened her music interests and listened to her ideas with patience. She is now confident and skilled enough to jam and improvise with her friends. They are so dedicated and inspiring and manage to bring out the best in everyone. I wish there were many more Rodrigos and Joes in this world!

How It Works

The In The Pocket band workshop takes place over three days.
Classes run from 11am to 2pm. On the last day the musicians will perform at 2pm and we wrap up around 2.30. Each day involves three learning sessions of around 45 minutes with two breaks. At the beginning of the workshop, we listen to some music and collectively choose songs to learn and spend the rest of the first day learning the parts of the first song under the guidance of the teachers. We finish the day with a jam session. On day two, we run through the song from day one and start learning a second song. We finish the day with a jam session. On day three, we hone and polish our two songs. We may even add another song to the mix. At the end of day three, we perform the songs we’ve learned for broadcast to the world via social media platforms.

Who Is It For?

All young musicians aged 8 to 16 are welcome to join. If you have at least six months experience playing your instrument, you can fit in and be part of the band. Whatever instruments you play, you can rock. OK, we haven’t had anyone turn up with a harp yet but we regularly work with singers, guitarists, pianists and keyboardists, drummers, saxophonists, trumpeters, ukuleleists, bassists and so on. If you play an exotic instrument and aren’t sure if you’ll fit in, please get in touch and we’ll let you know if you can participate.
If you have any other questions or queries about participation, please get in touch.

The Vibe

In The Pocket band workshops are run with the intention of empowering young musicians to learn independently and work collaboratively. In our experience, most young musicians with the right encouragement, are happy to take ownership of their own learning. They are keen to help each other perform at their best. With that in mind, we focus on creating an easy-going and supportive atmosphere where learning is fun and eveyone can contribute to the music making no matter their level of experience. Timings are relaxed, we do things by consensus deciding together if and when we need a break (more for the teachers than the students usually…), what repretoire to play and who performs what.

Pricing

The full price for the three day workshop is £120. Get £20 off if you book early. See Early Bird discount details above.
